Career Day: Health Care Professionals

Nicole Knops
Wellness Wednesday September 21 featured careers in the Health Services industry.
Wellness Wednesdays are a change to the weekly school schedule at Rosary. Each Wellness Wednesday will focus on one of the following topics: Career, Clubs, College, and Service. Studies are showing that more and more school districts are adopting schedules that look like this, as they seem to work well for the school, the student, and their families. These sessions are open to our entire Rosary community. We invite students, faculty, and staff to join us during these Wednesdays.

This week’s Wellness Wednesday at Rosary High School featured careers in the Health Services industry. On Wednesday, September 21, 2022, Rosary welcomed several health services professionals to the school to talk with students about their line of work; and answer any questions students had. Students attended various 15-minute sessions, depending on which careers piqued their interest.

The presenters from this week’s Wellness Wednesday, included:
  • Tony Hormanski – Dentist
  • Emily Rogers (‘05) – CNA, Patient Care Tech
  • Emily Michel – Speech Pathologist
  • Uche Onwuta – Chief Epidemiologist, KCHD
  • Jennifer Kumrow – Occupational Therapist
  • Leanna Precup – ER, Critical Care, Travel Nurse
Students who attended Tony Hormanski’s session on Dentistry said, “It seems like there is a lot of schooling involved, but once done with all the schooling, becoming a dentist seems like a flexible career, in terms of setting a work schedule; you can kind of set your own schedule.” The students really enjoyed listening to Hormanski’s career and expertise as a dentist.

In another session (pictured above), students listened to Rosary alumna, Emily Rogers (‘05) who discussed her career and training as a CNA and Patient Care Tech. The students were intrigued by her 3 day-12 hour work schedule. Rogers discussed her schooling, training, and responsibilities as a CNA, Patient Care Tech, she stated, “If you want to be a nurse, this would be a great program to start with.”

Chief Epidemiologist, KCHD, Uche Onwuta, talked with students during her session about her career as a public health epidemiologist. Onwuta expressed to students how much she loves her job, and that there is something different everyday in her position. “There is no limit; it’s so exciting” she said. She discussed her role in health-related outbreaks and various positions she has held during her career, including an academic instructor. Students asked questions related to the level of schooling involved in becoming an epidemiologist. Onwuta explained the various educational paths in the field of epidemiology and shared similar roles in public health dependent on which degree – Bachelors, Masters, Phd – an individual obtained, and/or are working toward.
Thank you to our wonderful presenters. Our students enjoyed attending your sessions and gained excellent real-life knowledge about the health services industry. Another great Wellness Wednesday success!

Stay tuned for upcoming Wellness Wednesday activities, including next week’s Homecoming themed, Wacky Wednesday!
